Moraes restricts carrying of firearms in DF during Lula's inauguration
Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered the temporary restriction on the carrying of firearms in the territory of the Federal District, as of 6pm today (28th) until next January 2nd.
The decision affects "all kinds of weapons possession, as well as the transport of weapons and ammunition by collectors, shooters and hunters," wrote Moraes. Whoever disrespects the order should be arrested for illegal possession of weapons, the minister ordered.
He responded to a request made by the Federal Police, which pointed out the need to ensure public order after extremist acts committed by people who do not accept the results of the presidential election.
Yesterday (27th), the future Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Flávio Dino, said he would also ask the Supreme Court to suspend the carrying of weapons during the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, scheduled for January 1st.
In the request, the Federal Police pointed to investigations into the financing and execution of violent acts by extremist groups, as well as the activities of digital militias that inflame voters through the distribution of false news and disinformation.
The Federal Police described in the request the attack on the headquarters of the institution itself, after the arrest of indigenous leader José Acacio Xerere Xavante, a supporter of President Jair Bolsonaro, at the beginning of the month, and also the attempted bombing revealed with the arrest of the suspect George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, on December 24.
In Wednesday's (28) decision, Moraes lamented the practice of acts that can be framed as crimes against the Democratic State of Law by extremist groups.
