Electoral Court schedules Bolsonaro's trial for June 22
The Superior Electoral Court has set June 22 as the date for the trial of Jair Bolsonaro regarding a meeting he held in July of the previous year. During the meeting, the former president gathered ambassadors at the Alvorada presidential palace and criticized the country's electronic voting system.
Bolsonaro is facing accusations of abusing political power and misusing the media in this case. Following the meeting with the ambassadors, the Democratic Labor Party (PDT) filed a complaint with the Electoral Court.
In response, the court issued an injunction ordering the removal of meeting footage from social media platforms and the official broadcast, as it considered that there was a dissemination of false or misleading information about the voting system in Brazil.
The Electoral Attorney General, in an opinion submitted to the court, supported Bolsonaro's conviction. The body argued that the former president had provided the ambassadors with untrue information about the voting system.
Throughout the proceedings, Bolsonaro's defense contended that the case fell outside the jurisdiction of the Electoral Court. According to his lawyers, the meeting with the ambassadors took place on July 18 when Bolsonaro was not yet an official candidate for the 2022 elections, and his name had not been endorsed at a party convention.
If found guilty, Bolsonaro would be ineligible for eight years and barred from running in the next elections.
