The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) announced today (May 30) the conclusion of the first national survey on the adoption of digital technologies related to advanced manufacturing, the so-called Industry 4.0. The new production logic involves the integration of physical and digital technologies, the integration of all stages of the value chain, from development to the end use of a product and the services linked to it, the autonomous operation of networks. From January 4 to 13, 2016, 2,225 all size companies responded to the survey.

According to the CNI, most efforts made by Brazil's industry is focused on the stage of industrial processes: 73% have adopted at least one technology related to the production process; 47% related to the development stage of the production chain and 33% to products and new business.

According to the CNI's Research and Competitiveness Executive Manager Renato da Fonseca, considering that Brazilian industry needs to compete globally and that it is lagging behind in this race, skipping steps is necessary. It is necessary to promote digitization in all dimensions simultaneously, he declared in a note.

The Confederation also reported that digitization is the first step to leading the country into a new industrial landscape. It also declared that in other countries, where this process is more advanced, productivity has already increased and the costs of equipment maintenance and energy consumption have dropped, in addition to an increased labor efficiency.

Infrastructure

The survey found, among other things, that the Brazilian industry is still becoming familiar with digitization and its impact on competitiveness. The lack of knowledge is way more severe among small companies (57%). In CNI's view, experts should be brought closer to the industry in a bid to increase the knowledge about the benefits of stepping up the country's industry.

The note also suggests, however, that the government could contribute to the expansion of digitization in the country by improving its digital infrastructure and encouraging professional training and the creation of dedicated lines of credit.

According to the figures in the study, slightly fewer than half of the companies avail themselves of at least one of the ten digital technologies listed in the research, like sensorless digital automation, rapid prototyping or 3D printing, and cloud-based or other digital services linked to products.

To 66% of the firms, implementation costs are the main internal obstacle to the adoption of digital technologies.
