President Rousseff promises to rule with the people
After taking office at the National Congress where she made a long speech, the re-elected President Dilma Rousseff spoke to the crowd from a speaker's platform just outside Palácio do Planalto on Thursday afternoon (Jan 1st) in Brasília. She greeted the thousands of people who went to see her from the Three Branches Plaza, and went on to extol the achievements of her government and her predecessor's in the past 12 years, when Brazil was ruled by the Workers Party.
“I represent an ideal of a nation which is more longlasting. This ideal, which began as a plan for the Lula administration and on into mine, belongs to every one of you. And you're the people we are ruling with,” Rousseff said.
The president went up the ramp leading into Palácio do Planalto towards the speaker's platform as she got out of the presidential Rolls Royce along with her daughter, Paula. She waved to the crowd all the way from Congress to the palace, where she put on the presidential sash.
On her way to the speaker's platform, Rousseff stopped to hug former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, her predecessor, and greet Ricardo Lewandowiski, Supreme Court Chief Justice. Following her address, she was greeted by foreign authorities, and swore her cabinet into office.
