Ex-director assigns wrongdoing at Petrobras to “bad politicians”
In testimony before the Congressional Committee of Investigation (CPI) at the Chamber of Deputies over the Petrobras corruption scandal, the former Petrobras Downstream Director Paulo Roberto Costa again said he regrets his involvement in the kickback scandal and reaffirmed he is “paying for it with a lot of suffering.”
“... what happened at Petrobras was, bad politicians made it happen. Brazil now has the opportunity to break with this rotten system. I'm making my contribution with a lot of suffering and difficulty. I want a better country for the future. I'm paying for it and it hasn't been easy,” said Costa, saying that he is willing to cooperate with the CPI.
This is the third time the former Petrobras director has testified at Congress over the scandal. Back in September, he spoke to a Bicameral Congressional Committee of Investigation (CPMI), but based on his right to silence, he declined answering the questions asked by the congressmen.
In December, Costa was again at Congress for a confrontation with Petrobras's former International Director, Nestor Cerveró. On that occasion, Costa said that bribery is widespread practice in Brazil's public sector – “from port to airport to highway to railway to dam projects” – and that “you can only become a Petrobras director by political appointment.”
