President Dilma Rousseff said she is brave enough to face up to “all of those who think that the best way to become president is to run over democracy,” while delivering housing units under the Minha Casa Minha Vida affordable housing program in Camaçari, Bahia, on Tuesday (Dec. 22). She was referring to the impeachment proceedings filed against her at the Chamber of Deputies.

“Regarding the impeachment, you can rest assured: Brazil is a strong democracy built by us. I had 53 million votes. The best way to show my gratitude is through programs such as Minha Casa Minha Vida first, and second by being brave enough to face up to the difficulties in this moment of crisis, and third by never failing to confront all of those who believe that the best way to become president is to run over democracy. They're not going to do that,” she stated.

She once again stated that there is no legal basis for the impeachment process against her. “My personal life and my life as a public figure are unblemished and I am committed to the public resources of this country.”

In another address, during the inauguration of a metro station in Salvador, Rousseff pointed out that the Federal Constitution is clear regarding what offenses may lead to a head of state being impeached. “There is no legal basis because my life's untainted. In my past and my present, there are no founded accusations against me,” she said.

The president acknowledged that the country is going through a crisis, but she guaranteed that that has not brought the government to a halt. “I can guarantee you: the country will not stop, we'll keep generating jobs, ensuring income, and we'll fight this crisis on a daily basis,” she added.
