Tourism Minister Henrique Eduardo Alves announced his resignation to President Dilma Rousseff on Monday (Mar. 28), the day before the date set by his party, the PMDB, to decide whether or not to stay in the governing coalition.

In his letter to the president, Alves said it had been a tough decision to make and he had thought it over, considering the “motivations and challenges” that had led up to his appointment as minister, including bringing tourism to the “forefront of the economic agenda”.

“Regardless of our plans, the national situation now presents the PMDB, my party for 46 years, the big challenge of choosing its way under the chairmanship of my comrade of so many struggles, Michel Temer. They all—the government I have worked for and PMDB, the party I'm in—know that I have sought dialogue all along. But this dialogue—I regret to admit—has died out,” he went on.
