Rousseff: ousting president with no impeachable offense a coup
President Dilma Rousseff stated today (Mar. 30) yet again that the impeachment proceedings filed against her at the lower house is a coup attempt as no impeachable offense has been found, even though impeachments are provided for in the Constitution.
“It is an absolutely mala fide act to say that, as a result, every impeachment is correct. In order to be correct, the Constitution requires what's called a crime of responsibility. An impeachment without a crime of responsibility is a coup. It's no use pretending we're discussing the impeachment on a theoretical level. We're discussing a very concrete impeachment with no crime of responsibility,” she argued.
Rousseff made the statement during the launch ceremony of the third phase of the Minha Casa Minha Vida affordable housing program at the Planalto presidential palace. Amid shouts of “Não vai ter golpe!” (“there will be no coup,” in a literal translation), representatives from social movements attending the event protested against the impeachment proceedings under deliberation at the Chamber of Deputies.
They also chanted slogans against vice-President Michel Temer, who is also head of the PMDB; lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha, of the same party; and Federal Judge Sérgio Moro, referring to them as coup-mongers.
Minha Casa, Minha Vida
In the third stage of the government initiate, the Minha Casa Minha Vida program is to contract another 2 million housing units up to 2018. According to the Ministry of Cities, some $58.3 billion will be invested in the next two years.
