In Brazil, lawmakers express support to Rousseff
After meeting with President Dilma Rousseff at Palácio do Planalto, the presidential office, the government leader in the Chamber of Deputies, José Guimarães, member of the Workers' Party (PT), said today (Apr. 18) that the fight to dismiss the impeachment in the Senate "has just begun."
"The purpose of the meeting was to show to the president our willingness to remain united in the struggle against impeachment. We are just at the beginning. We will enter in a long political dispute. The president is very optimistic. It is amazing to see how good is the president's mood, she is excited. She thanked us a lot for our integrity," said Guimarães.
In addition to Guimarães, other 22 lawmakers went to the presidential office to express their support to Rousseff, including Marcelo Castro and Celso Pansera, members of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Pary and who were dismissed from the posts as head of the Health Ministry and of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry, only to vote against the impeachment.
The government leader reported that he could not reveal the strategy to dismiss the impeachment proceedings at the Senate. "We do not reveal our strategy, we implement it. We are working hard to reverse the situation at the Senate. It was a momentary defeat. There were some betrayals, but this is part of the process".
For Deputy Jandira Feghali, member of the Brazilian Communist Party, although the Chamber of Deputies has given the victory to yes to impeachment, "they have also stripped before the public." "We are willing to put up the struggle at the streets, which obviously shows that the political instability has increased with the vote from yesterday. The Senate will react to yesterday's process of stripping off, the stripping of the Chamber of Deputies. And the Senate will be brought under an enormous pressure, even greater than the one exerted on the Chamber. No one can predict yet the result at the Senate. "
