The special committee of the Chamber of Deputies that is debating the impeachment case against President Dilma Rousseff will meet this Monday (Apr. 11) to vote on the report issued by Deputy Jovair Arantes recommending impeachment. The report will be submitted to the floor for approval whether or not it is approved by the impeachment committee.

A reading of the report should take place at the first plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies after it has been voted by the committee. Once read, the report will be published—which is expected to take place on Wednesday (13)—and from that point, the full chamber will have 48 hours to vote on it. The floor debate on impeachment will begin Friday (15) and should reach a conclusion on Sunday (17).

It tends to be a lengthy debate. “The impeachment of (former Brazilian president) Fernando Collor was carried out in two days. There are 513 deputies, which means a vote could take eight hours. I expect at least three days of sessions. It does not mean that it will all be over by Sunday. It may still continue on Monday. This has happened several times at the house before,” said the Speaker, Eduardo Cunha.
