Brazil: Senate elects special committee on impeachment
In a symbolic vote conducted by Senator Renan Calheiros, Brazil's Federal Senate named the 21 official members and the 21 substitutes appointed by the parties to make up the Special Committee, as authorized by the lower house, to deliberate over whether President Dilma Rousseff committed an impeachable offense.
As the country's biggest party, PMDB is entitled to name five full members, compared to four in the opposition—formed by the PSDB, DEM, and PV. In the latter bloc, the two most well-known names are linked to Senator Aécio Neves: Aloysio Nunes, who ran for vice-president in Neves's ticket in 2014, and Antônio Anastasia, who took office as vice-governor of Minas Gerais when Neves was reelected in 2006 and was elected Minas Gerais governor himself in 2010.
Backing the government is Rousseff's PT—with Senators Lindbergh Farias, from Rio de Janeiro, and Geleisi Hoffman, from Paraná—and the PDT, with a senator from Roraima.
Another coalition, whose member parties are the PSB, PPS, PCdoB, and Rede, named three senators, among whom Romário, former football star and world champion in 1994, senator for Rio de Janeiro.
Another two blocs filled the remaining chairs of the committee.
