Rousseff marshals support against impeachment ahead of lower house vote
As the final moments in the battle to avert a vote for impeachment at the Chamber of Deputies draw near, President Dilma Rousseff will spend the next couple of days trying to marshal support, persuade lawmakers to uphold her continuation as president and propose a “new coalition”.
On Friday (Apr. 15), she welcomes Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), who has recently taken an anti-impeachment stance saying the case against Rousseff was groundless. On Twitter, Almagro said he was coming to Brazil to “reaffirm his respect for institutions and for the Constitution.”
A meeting of Rousseff with state governors in her coalition who oppose impeachment could also be expected to take place in the coming days.
On Saturday, Rousseff will be at a pro-government rally called by Frente Brasil Popular movement that brings together social movements and trade unions in Brasília, including the Central Workers' Union (CUT), the Rural Landless Workers' Movement (MST), the National Students' Union (UNE), and the Brazilian Workers' Union. The meeting will be a gesture of appreciation for the activists who came from other parts of the country to stand up against impeachment and give a word of encouragement for the “battle” they will help the president wage in the next three days.
