Brazil: Lower house committee votes to move ahead with Rousseff impeachment
The special committee on impeachment of the Chamber of Deputies approved the rapporteur's recommendation to proceed with the impeachment case against President Dilma Rousseff. In a sitting that ended on Monday night (Apr. 11), they choose to continue the impeachment proceedings by 38 votes to 27.
The approved recommendation, drafted by Deputy Jovair Arantes, rapporteur of the impeachment proceedings at the Chamber of Deputies, will be submitted to the floor for consideration, and will be read at the regular meeting of Tuesday (12). Subsequently, the document will be published to the record of the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday (13).
Within 48 hours of the publication, the rapporteur's motion will be put on the house agenda for discussion and voting. The discussion is scheduled to begin on Friday (15) and a vote is expected on Sunday (17).
In order to be approved on the lower house floor, the motion to proceed with Rousseff's impeachment case must get favorable votes from two-thirds of the deputies—that is, at least 342 votes in a total of 513 deputies. If approved, the motion to impeach will go to the Senate floor, which will decide whether or not to put Rousseff on trial. But if the motion to proceed to the Senate fails to get 342 votes in the Chamber of Deputies, the impeachment case will be closed.
