Brazil: Acting lower house speaker revokes own decision to annul impeachment
In the early hours of Tuesday (May 10), the acting speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Waldir Maranhão, revoked his own decision made yesterday (9) to annul the session of the Chamber of Deputies that approved the continuation of impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff to Senate.
Maranhão communicated the revocation to Renan Calheiros, president of the Senate, where the decision on trying the impeachment case is pending.
On Monday, Calheiros disregarded Maranhão's decision to annul the lower house approval of impeachment proceedings and pressed ahead with the reading of the recommendation approved by the Senate's impeachment committee to pursue the case. This marked the beginning of the 48-hour deadline for senators to hold a vote on the floor to decide whether Rousseff should be put on trial and suspended from office for 180 days—a sitting that is expected to begin on Wednesday (11).
