Attorney-General José Eduardo Cardozo said today (May 5) that Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki's decision to suspend Deputy Eduardo Cunha's mandate and have him removed from his office in the lower house provides “very important” evidence that he was misusing his prerogatives as speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.

“That's exactly what we're arguing in the impeachment case: that he used it for his own benefit when he threatened the president by saying he would start the impeachment proceedings if he didn't get the votes,” Cardozo said. He also noted that Rousseff's impeachment request was granted the same day PT deputies declared they would not support Cunha in the case for stripping him of his mandate, which has been under deliberation at the lower house Ethics Council since November last year.

The statements were made shortly after Cardozo arrived at the Senate this morning (5), where he is taking part in a sitting of the special commission on the president's impeachment for the second time. “Cunha misused his power in a bid to hamper his own investigation. Now it's been proved,” he added.
