Prosecutor-General demands probe into Lula and 30 other people
Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot asked the Supreme Court to include in the Operation Car Wash case the investigations into former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, government ministers Jaques Wagner, Ricardo Berzoini, and Edinho Silva, Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha, and lawmakers members of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). The operation being conducted by the Federal Police probes into crimes of money laundering, corruption, and criminal conspiracy, related to the state-run firm Petrobras
The prosecutor-general also requested Justice Teori Zavascki, special investigator for the case in the Supreme Court, to open inquiry against rancher José Carlos Bumlai, Lula Institute President Paulo Okamotto, former BTG Pactual CEO André Esteves and former Petrobras CEO Sérgio Gabrielli, among others.
When requested the inclusion of these new involved people into the inquiry, which is underway since last year, Janot argued that investigations have deepened. The charges are based mainly on the statements made by Senator Delcídio do Amaral in his plea bargain agreement.
