Michel Miguel Elias Temer Lulia was born into a family of Lebanese immigrants in São Paulo state on September 23, 1940. He is the youngest of eight siblings. With a Law PhD from the Catholic University of São Paulo, he is the author of a number of books on Constitutional Law, and has also been a university lecturer.

As the Vice-President of Brazil in both of President Dilma Rousseff's terms, Temer was responsible for the government's political coordination. In those days, Rousseff had maintained that Temer's conduct was “very appropriate”. But in recent months, they became increasingly at odds with each other, and last March his PMDB party announced it was walking away from the governing coalition to support Rousseff's impeachment.

Temer began his political career in the PMDB party, which he never left. In 1984, he took charge of the São Paulo State Security Secretariat, and his job there was marked by innovations. He created the community security councils and established the first police service focused on violence against women. In March 1987, he was first sworn into office as a federal deputy in the lower house of the National Congress.

In 1992, Temer returned to the São Paulo Security Secretariat six days after the Carandiru Massacre, when military police stormed the Carandiru penitentiary in São Paulo to repress a riot in a gory episode that left 111 inmates dead.

Temer served six terms as a federal deputy and was elected speaker three times (1997, 1999 and 2009). In 2009, he earned a recognition as the most influential member of Brazil's Congress.

Private life

Michel Temer has been married to Marcela Temer for 13 years, and the couple have a young boy called Michel. He also has three daughters from a previous marriage.

Temer has always been reserved about his private life and kept a low profile in Brazil's political scene. With the publication of his poetry book called Anônima Intimidade (“Anonymous Intimacy”) in 2013, he revealed traits of his private feelings.
