The Brazilian government is to cut 4,307 posts and civil servant positions occupied by appointees, acting Planning Minister Dyogo Oliveira announced Friday (Jun. 10). Another 10,467 of the so-called Superior Management and Counseling posts, also occupied by appointees, will be turned into regular civil servant positions, originally designed only for those who passed a public examination.

The ministries and agencies affected by the move will be given 30 days to design a new administrative framework and adapt to the new setting. According to Oliveira, the changes will allow the government to spare a yearly $68 million. The overhaul is expected to reduce spending and enhance the management of government agencies.

The changes bring the number of Superior Management and Counseling posts to 10,404 from 24,250. The result takes into account both the positions cut and those who had their status altered.
