Brazil: Impeachment trial expected to end halfway into Rio Olympics
The final ruling in the impeachment case against President Dilma Rousseff is expected to take place in the middle of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, according to the plan approved by the procedural impeachment commission on Monday (June 6).
President Dilma Rousseff, who is currently suspended, should be examined on June 20. Between June 21 and July 5, the prosecution may present its arguments in writing. Then, the defense will have between July 6 and 21 to present its final written statements.
According to the plan presented by Senator Antonio Anastasia, in charge of reporting on the proceedings of the impeachment commission, he will present the report with the recommendations to the Senate on July 28. From this point, the Senate will have 48 hours to take a floor vote on the charges to decide if there is probable cause for the case to proceed to a final trial, which should take place on August 2—the first business day subsequent to the deadline.
Then the senators will have 14 days to hold a final trial to rule if Rousseff should be impeached and permanently removed from office. The final ruling vote is expected to take place on August 16, halfway into the Olympics (which runs from August 5 to 21).
