Federal Judge Sergio Moro, in charge of Operation Car Wash, sentenced former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Wednesday (Jul 12) to nine years and six months in prison on charges of corruption and money laundering. The conviction comes in connection with the probe into the purchase and renovation of a triplex apartment in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo. The sentence, made public today (12), stipulates that Lula may appeal the decision at liberty.
In his ruling, Moro says that the renovation works carried out in the apartment by firm OAS are proof that the property was meant for the former president.
