J&F leniency deal approved
Brazil's Federal Prosecution Service (MPF) has approved a leniency deal with J&F group, the holding that controls JBS meatpacking giant, ordering the company to pay at least $3.27 billion in fines and compensation for kickbacks paid to public officials. Under the deal, which was signed in early June by prosecutors in the Federal District, $2.55 billion will be given to public agencies hurt by wrongdoing, and the remaining $732 million will go into funding social projects.
J&F will have 25 years to repay the amount, which will be adjusted for inflation.

The deal was confirmed by an anti-corruption division within the prosecution service on Thursday (Aug. 24), the date that marks the beginning of the 25-year deadline.
In her report recommending approval of the deal, Deputy Prosecutor Mônica Nicida Garcia says the company provided the authorities with “new information” with tangible elements that “enable evidentiary efforts leading to the establishment of criminal, civil, administrative, and electoral accountability”.
At the request of the prosecutors in charge of the deal, the anti-corruption division declassified the deal, since the plea bargaining statements from Joesley Batista, Wesley Batista, Ricardo Saud, and Francisco de Assis e Silva have become public.
