Brazil responds to efforts against recession, Temer says
In a statement made today (Sep. 26) Brazil President Michel Temer said he took over the country at a moment of severe recession, and added that the economy has just started to respond to the efforts made by his government to boost growth.
“We took the country in a significant, massive recession. We worked hard, pulled the country out of the recession and in the last five months, despite one thing or another, the country started to respond to all of the efforts the government has made to fight recession and to stimulate growth in the country,” the president said during his address.
He pointed out that the 76 thousand-point peak reached by the Brazilian stock exchange last week shows investors' credibility and confidence in the country, adding that, during his trips abroad, executives have expressed significant interest in investing in Brazil. “No one invests if there's no confidence in whatever is happening in the country at the moment,” he declared.
New program
Temer spoke at the launch ceremony of Progredir, a new initiative aiming to provide families in the Bolsa Família conditional cash transfer program and other government initiatives with financial emancipation.
The idea is to promote professional training, stimulate entrepreneurship and expand the access to the labor market. Nearly $1 billion will be made available as microcredit every year.
Bolsa Família has always been the flagship of the Workers' Party (PT), of which former President Dilma Rousseff, impeached in August last year, is a member.
The program was retained by Michel Temer. Under his administration, however, measures were implemented to verify the eligibility of its beneficiaries. Thus, the new initiative aims to ensure that those reached by the program no longer depend on the cash from Bolsa Família.
Charges
The launch of a new program takes place on the same week as the Brazilian lower house starts to deliberate on the second round of charges submitted by federal prosecutors against President Michel Temer. He is being accused of racketeering and obstruction of justice.
Two members of Temer's cabinet are also being targeted by the charges: Chief of Staff Eliseu Padilha, and Moreira Franco, head of the president's secretariat.
