Brazilian Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot announced he initiated investigations into the omission of information in the negotiations of plea bargain deals with JBS executives. If omissions are proved to have taken place, the deal may be made null. The announcement was made this Monday (Sep 4).

The issue was raised after suspicions arose among federal prosecutors that executive Joesley Batista and other people who agreed to plea bargain deals, linked to the JBS, refrained from disclosing information to the authorities.

Plea bargain

Despite the possibility of canceling the deal with JBS, Janot advocated the use of plea bargain deals as a tool to be used as part of an investigation. In his view, if the JBS were found to be guilty of any wrongdoing, they must be punished for it, but that “does not discredit plea bargain deals as an institute.”
