Brazil defense minister to lead new Public Security Ministry
An official decision from the president's office is to name Defense Minister Raul Jungmann as head of the new Extraordinary Ministry of Public Security, to be created today (Feb. 26) through a provisional decree to be signed by President Michel Temer.
The information was confirmed by Alexandre Parola, spokesman for the president. Joaquim Silva e Luna—Secretary-General at the Defense Ministry and Army Reserve General—is to take Jungmann's place.
The move increases the number of government ministries to 29.
Career
Raul Jungmann has headed the country's Defense Ministry since 2016. During his administration, he coordinated the security scheme for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro and the removal of Brazilian troops from Haiti in 2017.
