Manuela d’Ávila to run for president with Brazil Communist Party
Manuela d’Ávila was confirmed Tuesday (Aug. 1) by the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) this afternoon as the party’s presidential candidate. Manuela d’Ávila currently serves as state deputy for Rio Grande do Sul.
Expressing hopes for the possible unification of Brazil’s other left-leaning alliances towards a single candidacy, d’Ávila described herself as the best option for a “new [development] project” to redress regional inequalities as well as those based on gender and race.
After being unanimously backed by PCdoB delegates, Manuela d’Ávila discussed in her address such topics as a reform in public security and in the country’s tax law, the fight against big corporations and the revocation of the labor overhaul and the constitutional amendment that introduced a cap on public spending for 20 years. She criticized the “record-breaking unemployment rate,” the reduction in the total amount paid to workers throughout the year, and the dropout rate at universities and vocational schools.
