Temer meets with executives in New York

Brazilian President Michel Temer is expected to take part in a lunch meeting with executives in New York today (Sep. 24), held by the US Chamber of Commerce. Discussions will focus on measures to boost bilateral trade at a moment of fierce dispute between the US and the Chinese.

Temer is also expected to deliver the opening speech of the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations tomorrow (25). Brazil’s representative has traditionally been the one opening the session since 1947.

The agenda includes the defense of multilateralism, criticism of protectionism, and the concern over immigration and international security measures.

Temer will also meet with Portuguese UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as with Colombia’s new President Iván Duque, and participate in a meeting with leaders of Mercosur, a bloc formed by Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay—as Venezuela has been suspended.

Also expected to take place is a meeting with representatives from both Mercosur and the European Union. The two blocs have negotiated deals to settle disputes in a number of sectors and increase trade for 18 years.

The Brazilian president is expected to return to Brazil tomorrow and go on two other trips before leaving his post.

In November, Temer will go to Argentina for a G-20 meeting. Late in the same month, his staff is considering a trip to Lebanon, where some of his relatives live. The trip should include a stop in Marrakesh, Morocco.
