Thousands of women protest against Bolsonaro
Thousands of women staged demonstrations across a number of cities in Brazil and overseas against presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro. In São Paulo city alone, some 200 thousand people were reported to have attended the rallies, according to the organizers. Protesters demonstrated against statements made by Bolsonaro, regarded as sexist, homophobic, and racist, In Rio, a large crowd occupied the downtown area.
Banners, posters, and stickers showing Bolsonaro and the hashtag #EleNão (#NotHim) were seen in all demonstrations this weekend, encouraging people not to vote for him. The first round of the vote will take place next Sunday (7).
In Brasília, capital of the country and seat of the Brazilian government, at least 30 thousand people were reported by the organizers to have joined the event created by the collective Women Against Bolsonaro.
On social media, pictures and videos of the rallies were published, in addition to testimonies and information about the marches. Brazilians and foreigners also gathered to protest in New York (US), Vienna (Austria), Milan (Italy), London (UK), Paris (France), Berlin (Germany), Barcelona (Spain), Porto, Coimbra, and Lisbon (Portugal).
Rallies in support of Bolsonaro
A number of demonstrations were also held in favor of Bolsonaro on Saturday (29). One of them was staged on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, the state who elected him as deputy several times. Men and women in green and yellow carried posters praising Jair Bolsonaro.
Information circulated on social media on demonstration held in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Teresina (Piauí), Manaus (Amazonas), and several other smaller towns across the country. In reference to their opponents, marchers used the hashtag #EleSim (#YesHim).
On Bolsonaro’s Twitter account, a video was published showing a march in his support on one of the main thoroughfares in Joinville, Santa Catarina. His team also posted a video with a protest staged with vehicles in Jiparaná, Rondônia.
Bolsonaro’s son Carlos tweeted a video with demonstrators outside the Amazonas Theater, chanting words in support of Bolsonaro’s candidacy. Most were women dressed in pink. Carlos Bolsonaro also posted pictures of marchers outside his father’s house, in Rio de Janeiro.
