Originally scheduled for December 12, the surgery for the removal of a colostomy bag being used by President-Elect Jair Bolsonaro has been postponed. The information can be found in the medical report released on Friday afternoon (Nov. 23) by the Albert Einstein Hospital, in São Paulo. Bolsonaro went to the hospital this morning for laboratory and imaging tests and consultations.

Bolsonaro is reported to be “clinically well and showing great evolution; however, imaging tests still show inflammation of the peritoneum and adherence between intestinal loops.” The medical staff therefore decided to postpone the intestinal reconstruction procedure.

The president-elect will be re-examined in January so the right time for the surgery can be ascertained. The report is signed by doctors Antônio Luiz Macedo (surgeon) Leandro Echenique (general, cardiologist), and Miguel Cendoroglo, superintendent director at Albert Einstein Hospital.

The evaluation comes before Bolsonaro’s third surgery since he was stabbed in the abdomen by Adélio Bispo during a rally in Juiz de Fora, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, on September 6.

His first surgery was extensive, and was conducted at a Juiz de Fora hospital. A second procedure was carried out at Albert Einstein, and aimed to fix a case of intestinal adherence. His recovery from the third surgery is estimated to last ten to 15 days.

The removal of the colostomy bag had been slated for December 12, 20 days before his inauguration ceremony, scheduled for January 1. The new date is not likely to be fixed until January.
