Brazil president calls for unblocking of federal highways nationwide
President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday (Nov. 2) asked protesters to unblock federal highways nationwide. In a video posted on social media, the president said: "We must respect people's right to come and go."
Bolsonaro said that demonstrations are welcome, they are part of the democratic game, and that many similar protests have been made in Brazil over the years. But, according to him, the closing of highways throughout Brazil is not legal, it harms people's right to come and go, provided for in the Constitution. "Unblock the highways, this is not part of legitimate demonstrations," the president appealed.
According to the latest information from the Federal Highway Police, 17 Brazilian states still register blocked highways. The protesters do not accept the result of the presidential elections. The second round was held last Sunday (30) and the winner was candidate Luis Inácio Lula da Silva.
