Lula and Biden talk about coup acts in Brazil

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a phone call, this Monday (Jan. 9), from U.S. president Joe Biden, expressing his solidarity after the anti-democratic acts that resulted in the destruction of public buildings at the Three Powers Square, in Brasília. 

Biden reinforced the invitation for an official visit of Lula to the USA, foreseen for the beginning of February.  

According to a statement issued by both governments, "Biden conveyed the United States' unconditional support towards Brazil's democracy and the will of the Brazilian people as expressed in last elections, won by President Lula. The U.S. president condemned violence and the attack on democratic institutions and against the peaceful transfer of power.

"Both leaders have committed to work together on issues facing Brazil and the United States, including climate change, economic development, peace and security. President Biden invited President Lula to visit Washington in early February for in-depth consultations on a broad common agenda, and President Lula accepted the invitation," the statement reads.

Yesterday afternoon (9), Lula also talked with some heads of state, who deplored the coup attempt in the country.
