Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced on Thursday (Mar. 30) that the federal government will support the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in its bid to host the 2027 Women's World Cup.

"Speaking at an event at the Alvorada Palace to present the 2023 World Cup trophy, which is currently touring the 32 countries competing in the tournament to be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, the president declared that it would be a galvanizing occasion to foster political awareness among the Brazilian people. He emphasized the importance of enabling women to participate in all spheres of society on their own terms, wherever they choose, and in whatever way they desire. The Brazilian women's team is seeking an unprecedented title at this event.

Additionally, Lula highlighted the impressive strides Brazil has made in terms of infrastructure since hosting the men's World Cup in 2014. “Today, we have a level of urban infrastructure and stadium facilities that far surpass what was available in 2014, almost everything is ready, and we have very good stadiums,” he stated.

National Strategy

At the event, Lula signed a decree to establish the National Strategy for Women's Soccer Development. The program, overseen by the Ministry of Sports, will implement a series of measures to promote the growth of both professional and amateur soccer for girls and women throughout the country. Among the key initiatives are the expansion of investment opportunities and technical training programs.

"The National Strategy for Women's Soccer Development is a transversal initiative that addresses principles of the social agenda of this government: gender equity, the fight against racism, and the reduction of inequalities. This comprehensive agenda finds an important tool in sports, particularly in the Ministry of Sports. In the case of women's soccer, we always count on the partnership with CBF and the state federations," Sports Minister Ana Moser said.

Brazilian Football Confederation’s head Ednaldo Dias said "CBF is very happy with initiatives aimed at promoting women's participation in sports, particularly in soccer, and we are committed to continuing our partnership to further strengthen women's soccer in Brazil not just for athletes, but also for women's soccer as a whole."
