Lula assumes G20 presidency as he heads to India
New Delhi is gearing up to host the G20 Summit, a gathering of the world's 19 largest economies along with the European Union. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil is set to depart for the Indian capital on Thursday (Aug. 7), following the Brazilian Independence Day parade in Brasília. The summit, taking place on August 9 and 10, marks the culmination of India's tenure as the G20's rotating presidency, with Brazil poised to assume the role on December 1.
In preparation for the summit, various meetings and collaborative efforts are underway, including ministerial-level discussions among member countries. The official agenda encompasses a range of critical themes, including sustainable green development, environmental and climate concerns, energy transitions, and the pursuit of global net zero emissions. Additionally, topics such as inclusive growth, attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), healthcare, education, infrastructure, technological transformations, multilateral reforms, and the future of work and employment will be addressed. The event will also facilitate bilateral discussions between leaders.
Presidency
One of the symbolic moments of the G20 Summit will be the ceremonial transfer of the group's rotating presidency, involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lula. During the summit, President Lula is slated to deliver speeches at the first two sessions and will conclude the meeting by presenting the priorities and challenges of Brazil's upcoming presidency, set to commence on December 1, 2023.
Brazil's rotating presidency of the G20 will extend until the close of 2024, culminating in a subsequent summit to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19 of that year.
