Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged this Sunday (Oct. 1) from Brasília’s Sírio-Libanês Hospital after undergoing surgery to repair the right side of his hip on Friday (Sep. 29).

Originally he was due to leave hospital on Monday (Oct. 2) or Tuesday (3), but the team working with the president said in a medical report released Sunday afternoon that after good clinical progress, they had decided to release him.

At the Alvorada Palace, his official residence, he will be dealing with matters linke to the presidency over the next three weeks, like the decision on the new Supreme Court justice to replace retired Justice Rosa Weber, and the country’s new attorney-general, who will fill the seat left vacant by Attorney Augusto Aras.

According to the medical team, President Lula will continue with rehabilitation exercises on his right hip and physical therapy sessions at home.

On Friday, the president also underwent a blepharoplasty, a procedure to remove excess skin from his eyelids.

On Sunday morning, first lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, known as Janja, posted on social media about President Lula’s discharge. “Someone’s coming home for dinner today!”

Words of gratitude

After arriving at the Alvorada Palace, the president expressed his gratitude on X (former Twitter) for all the prayers and messages he had received. He wrote he is recovering “to work even harder for Brazil,” and quipped saying he felt as though he could run a marathon.
