The Rio 2016 Olympics Committee has published its spectator guide with guidelines for entry at the competition arenas on its official website. The information includes a list of banned or restricted items for these venues.

Prohibited items include explosive devices and fireworks, flares, smoke bombs, as well as toxic or poisonous substances (in any form or container) and firearms (or parts of firearms, except for weapons carried by police and authorized military personnel).

Also banned are bladed or cold weapons and other objects that may be used for causing injuries (knives, scissors, daggers, swords, pocket knives, drills, saws, harpoons, arrows, axes, screwdrivers, needles, hammers, pliers, batons, or other), as well as liquids and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

Other less obvious prohibitions include selfie sticks, glass containers or objects, needles, razors, and helmets.

At football stadiums in Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Brasília, Salvador, and Manaus, any bags and backpacks are prohibited unless they are transparent.

The Rio 2016 Committee has also banned any items that can be used for protesting and demonstrating, including posters and placards, banners, and ropes. The Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place amid a sensitive political period for Brazil as a suspended President Dilma Rousseff awaits impeachment proceedings and the population is divided by mixed national sentiment about her impeachment.

Political demonstrations will be prohibited during the games, which extends to “items with a political, religious or other theme that may be used to offend or incite discord.”

Up to five items of personal care products including sunscreen and insect repellent will be allowed, as long as they are in the original packaging. Food will only be allowed if in the original, sealed packaging. Any umbrellas must be small, folding, and have no sharp edges.
