The first men's football match in the Olympic Games in Brasília started with few fans at the Mané Garrincha Stadium, despite the boosted security scheme. The ban on non-transparent bags and purses sparked discontent and a variety of complaints.

Many spectators disregarded the warnings and were not allowed inside carrying bags and purses. Outraged, some claimed they had to keep their bags due to health issues.

“I have diabetes. I keep chocolate and medicines here in the purse,” a woman complained, indignant.

Another woman argued she was pregnant and was using her purse to carry anti-nausea medicines.

Those who could not keep their bags in a car had to throw them in trash cans and had their items collected by trash workers. Some security guards took a more strict approach and also prohibited plastic bags that were not see-through. Small purses, however, were subsequently allowed by security following the large number of complaints.

Inside the stadium, spectators could feel safe. A thorough search was conducted in the premises early in the morning by agents from Military Police Special Operations Battalion (the BOPE), the Fire Department, and the National Nuclear Energy Community.
