US swimmer charged by Brazil authorities
Special Tourist Police (DEAT), of Rio’s Civil Police, completed today (Aug. 25) investigation into the false robbery case involving US Olympic swimmers. Gold medalist Ryan Lochte has been charged with falsely reporting a crime. The file was submitted to the Special Great Events Court of Rio de Janeiro.
The police have requested a letter to be sent to Lochte, who is in the United States, explaining the legal process related to the charges. Moreover, they have also requested a copy of the case to be sent to International Olympic Committee’s ethics commission.
After leaving a party in the early morning hours, during Rio 2016 Olympics, Lochte and three US swimmers vandalized the bathroom of a gas station. Security guards summoned the police and have not let the swimmers leave, demanding the payment for the loss. On the same day, Lochte was interviewed by US TV reporter and said he had been robbed at gunpoint. He has also reported the fabricated story to Rio’s Civil Police.
After police found some story inconsistencies, the court ordered the swimmers’ passports to be seized. However, Ryan Lochte had already returned to the US.
