The city of São Paulo starts today (Mar. 18) to administer the fourth dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 in people aged 80 and older who took the third dose at least four months ago. The estimated target is 250 thousand people.

By Thursday (17), the city had applied 29.029 million doses of the vaccine against COVID-19—11.67 million as the first dose, 10.66 million as the second, 6.34 million additional doses, and 345.5 single-shot vaccines.

Intensive care

A survey conducted across São Paulo state found that seniors are more numerous among people admitted to intensive care units (ICU) for COVID-19 in 76 percent of private hospitals. The study was released by São Paulo state union of hospitals SindHosp.

According to SindHosp head Dr. Francisco Balestrin, the prevalence of the elderly in intensive care may be explained by the greater number of comorbidities assailing those in this age group and also by a lower immune response to vaccines.
