The Brazilian Navy today (Feb. 22) is sending the largest ship in its fleet—the Multipurpose Aircraft Ship Atlântico—to operations as a field hospital on the northern coast of São Paulo. The ship should arrive on the city of São Sebastião tomorrow (23).
According to the Navy, the ship should help improve medical care to the homeless and relieve the burden on hospitals in the region, allowing them to prioritize the most serious cases.
In addition to the Atlântico, the Navy is sending the Guarapari, a cargo landing craft, which has a ramp capable of docking on beaches, facilitating the rescue of victims in isolated areas.
Aboard the Atlântico are six helicopters, three vehicle landing craft, and two speedboats. More than a thousand military personnel will be involved in the action, among them a team of 28 health professionals.
The ship’s medical center includes an orthopedic surgeon, a general surgeon, an anesthesiologist, a general practitioner, a pharmacist, a dental surgeon, nursing technicians, an oral hygiene assistant, and a laboratory assistant.
