Senate leader says shutting down ministries good for fiscal adjustment
Senate President Renan Calheiros hailed the announcement made by Planning Minister Nelson Barbosa that the government was to shut down ten ministries and extinguish a thousand positions of trust. “I believe it's a good initiative from President [Dilma Rousseff]. I think this could have been done long ago,” he said. “I think this serves as a great example for what could be done as part of the fiscal adjustment,” he added.
On the confirmation hearing of Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot, nominated by Dilma Rousseff for another term as head of the Public Prosecution Office, Calheiros said he does not believe the outcome of the vote will come as a surprise. In his view, the president's decision will be approved by the Commission for Constitution and Justice, made up of nine Congress members being investigated under Operation Car Wash, spearheaded by Janot. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (26).
Calheiros restated his commitment to submit Janot's name for vote at the upper house no later than tomorrow, should Janot's appointment pass. “The greatest sign of neutrality the Senate could give is to deliberate in a respectful, regular manner. A good thing about Brazil is that institutions are operational; I think this should be supported,” he argued.
The Senate has the prerogative to approve the nomination of the prosecutor-general.
