After a turbulent day in the foreign exchange market, the US currency closed above R$ 4 for the first time ever since the real was created. The commercial dollar finished the Tuesday (Sep.22) at R$ 4.054, up 1.84%. The record broken had been set on October 10, 2002, at R$ 3.99.
The surge stands at 11.75% for September alone and totals 52.47% year-to-date.
Unlike yesterday (21), when the Central Bank sold $3 billion of its international reserves in repurchase deals, this Tuesday the financial institution made no direct intervention in the stock market. The Central Bank continued rolling over currency swap auctions. In such auctions, the bank does not offer new swap deals, but rather postpones the mature date for contracts auctioned in previous months.
