São Paulo cost of living faces slowdown in August
The cost of living in the city of São Paulo rose 0.06% in August from the previous month, according to a survey conducted by the Inter-Union Department for Statistics and Economic Studies (Dieese). In July, the rate stood at 0.95%. The prices that faced the sharpest hikes are those associated with health care, education and reading, transport, and food.
Despite the slowdown, the inflation in Brazil's largest city is up 10.05% in the 12-month period, with the impact heavier on low-income families, for whom the accumulated price hikes total 11.76%.
The reduction in the inflation for foods was driven by the price of potato, which became 14.83% cheaper in August. Fruits and vegetables also reported a slip. Raw milk, poultry and eggs, and meats, however, showed an increase in prices.
