Joaquim Levy, who stepped down as Brazil's Finance Minister less than a month ago, will take office as Chief Financial Officer for the World Bank Group, based in Washington. He will replace Bertrand Badré from France.

The CFO is responsible for the bank's treasury, including financial operations, corporate budgeting, risk management, and comptrolling. Within the bank's organization structure, Levy will report only to the president, Jim Yong Kim.

Because the World Bank is a multilateral body with Brazil as one of its members, Levy is not required to observe the intermission for former ministers wishing to return to the private sector.

Levy's appointment was announced Monday (Dec. 11) by the World Bank. The bank has also confirmed the appointment of Shaolin Yang from China as Chief Administrative Officer.

This will be the second international position held by Levy. Between April and December 2006, he was Vice President for Finance and Administration at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Originally established to fund the reconstruction of countries devastated by World War II, the World Bank currently provides loans to fund projects in developing countries.
