The Brazilian government has ruled that Google and Facebook must remove false advertisements about its Desenrola Brasil, a debt renegotiation program in effect since July 17.

Since its launch, criminals have been using the internet to commit financial fraud and pull off scams. A court ruling published today orders the companies Facebook Serviços Online do Brasil Ltda. and Google Brasil Internet Ltda. to immediately take down this kind of deceptive content.

The organizations have 24 hours to remove the inappropriate content and 48 hours to take down any sponsored or fraudulent ads about the government initiative. Failure to comply may result in a fine of BRL 150 thousand ($38.51 thousand) per day.

In addition, the companies are required to preserve all records on the ads deleted. After removal, the two platforms have ten days to submit a report on the efforts made to curb the spread of such material, including details about all content involving the program, whether legitimate or not.
