Minister advocates using oil royalties to fund education
The minister of Education, Renato Janine Ribeiro, spoke out Wednesday (July 8) for the use of Brazil's oil profits from the pre-salt production to fund education. According to him, this is a “crucial” resource for the sector, especially at a time when the population is concerned about tax increases.
“We welcome all resources that don't come from taxes. It's important to make sure we don't waste something that took billions of years to build up [oil], but use it to build long-lasting foundations,” the minister said.
Janine's statements were made during a public hearing held by the Senate Committee on Education, Culture, and Sports, which provided a review of the first year of the National Education Plan (PNE). During the meeting, representatives from education-related organizations presented their manifesto to the minister and the senators, urging them to fulfill the PNE targets.
