Brazil beat Colombia, climb to 2nd phase of women’s volleyball worlds
The Brazilian women’s volleyball team celebrated their third straight win in the world championship in Arnhem, Netherlands, thus qualifying in advance for the second round of the competition.
On Wednesday (Sep 28), the Brazilians defeated Colombia by three sets to zero (25/14, 25/12, 25/20). They are now second only to China in Group D. The group also includes the Czech Republic, Argentina, and Colombia—who have been defeated by the Brazilian team—as well as Japan.
Coach José Roberto Guimarães’s team will have two more games to improve their score and reach the top at the end of the first stage. On Friday (30), Brazil is slated to face Japan at 9:15 am Brasília time, and at the same time on Saturday (Oct 1), China.
The best performance on the court today was setter Gabi’s, with 19 points—15 of them attacking, three serving, one blocking. Further highlights include players Kisy (13 points), Carol (11), and Carol Gattaz (10).
“It was our third consecutive victory. The team were more aggressive and consistent in today’s match, with few mistakes and a blocking spree from our central players. That’s what we need, to evolve with every match,” said Gabi, captain of the team.
The world championship brings together 24 teams divided into four groups. The four best teams in each group advance to the second phase.
