Brazilians advance in women’s world tennis championship in Abu Dhabi
The Brazilian women's tennis shone once again at the WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi. On Thursday afternoon (Feb. 9), after a 3h13 long battle, Bia Haddad, current world number 14, qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Kazakh Yulia Putintseva (45th), by 2 sets to 1.
Bia will have another tough game today (10). Her opponent in the quarterfinals will be number 10 Elena Rybakina, current Wimbledon champion and runner-up this year at the Australian Open. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. (Brasilia time).
Who also advanced in Abu Dhabi earlier, this time in the doubles tournament, was Luisa Stefani and her partner Chinese Shuai Zhang. They scored a double 6/4 over German Laura Siegemund and Belgian Kirsten Flipkens and ensured their participation in the semifinals.
Stefani and Zhang will return to the court on Saturday (11) against the other winners of the quarterfinals, which will be known after the duel between doubles Russian Vera Zvonareva and Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang against Japanese Miyu Kato and Romanian Monica Niculescu.
