Brazil’s Ingrid Oliveira secured the country’s first Olympic spot in diving at the Paris 2024 games in the early hours of Tuesday (Jul. 18) by qualifying for the final of the 10m platform at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. In the women’s semi-final, she ranked eighth with 313.90 points. Only 12 of the 18 jumpers at this stage qualified.

“The race was tough. Really difficult. very difficult. I knew it wouldn’t be easy to win a spot, but things worked out. Now it’s time to stay focused, the final’s this Wednesday. I’ll give my best in the race. I’m counting on everyone’s support,” said the athlete, who has competed in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Olympic qualification at the World Championships in Fukuoka belongs to the country, not a specific athlete. The team to go to the games will not be defined until 2024.

The world championships award three places in each of the synchronized events. The competition is the first of three qualification windows for the Paris 2024 games. Later on, in October, the Pan American Games will take place in Santiago, Chile, which grants spots to the champions of the individual competitions (3m springboard and 10m platform, for men and women). In 2024, the world championships in Doha, Qatar, will award four places.
