Navy launches waterway security operation

The Brazilian Navy has launched Operation Blue Amazon on Monday (Feb. 17). The aim is to step up security at sea, rivers, and lakes, and train marines for service during the World Soccer Cup.
The operation is managed by the Naval Operations Command and involves 30,000 personnel, 60 ships, 15 aircraft, as well as port authority boats. This has been the largest force ever used in the so-called Brazilian territorial waters. Actions planned include deploying marines to guard ports and harbors, and oil terminals and platforms.
The Navy explained that the name assigned to the Operation – Blue Amazon – refers to the eastern coastal area of Brazil, covering about 4.5 million square kilometers. It is similar to the green Amazon in terms of strategic and economic potential. In addition to sea operations, vessels will patrol and inspect at Brazil's rivers and lakes. Other bodies involved in the operation include the Air Force, Federal Police Department, and Federal Revenue Service.
In rivers and lakes, those caught driving boats, watercraft, jet skis, and other water vehicles without valid, current licenses will be subject to notifications, fines, or even seizure of license and watercraft.
