Bank employees from throughout Brazil but Mato Grosso and Roraima states have agreed to end a 21-day national strike Monday (Oct. 26). The National Confederation of Financial Industry Workers (CONTRAF) reported 60% of all branches remained shut down since October 6. Banks should restore operation in their usual opening hours as of Tuesday (27).

A majority of the bank workers’ conventions have agreed to the National Federation of Banks' (FENABAN) proposed 10% increase in their wages and profit sharing plans (PLR) and wage floor. With the 10% PLR rise, banks will have to pay an additional 2.2% of their net profits to be split equally among employees.

Also proposed was a 14% increase in meal and grocery vouchers. While bank representatives have agreed to waive part of the unworked strike hours, a remainder will have to be compensated for by employees by one extra hour of work daily until December 15.

The chair of the Union of Bank Employees of São Paulo, who is also a coordinator at the National Bank Workers’ Command, Juvandia Moreira, said the pay rise will accrue “20.83% real gain on wages and 42.3% on the wage floor in 12 years’ time.”. She rated this as “one of the strongest strike actions in recent years. We earned our achievements through struggle and mobilization.”
