UN passes Brazil resolution on combating corruption
The sixth session of the Conference of the States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption passed a resolution submitted by Brazil on the use of civil and administrative proceedings against corruption. The conference began on Monday (Nov. 2) and ends today (Nov. 6) in St. Petersburg, Russia.
According to Justice Ministry, the approval of the resolution promotes cooperation among Brazil and other countries for fighting corruption because it allows Brazilian institutions, like Attorney-General's Office (AGU), Comptroller-General Office (CGU), and Public Prosecution Office, to file civil actions directly in foreign courts for the asset recovery embezzled by corruption.
Currently, according to the note, international cooperation has no obligation to assist and cooperate with information on civil and administrative proceedings.
The United Nations Convention against Corruption has been attended by 177 States Parties and is the most important international legal instrument to prevent and combat corruption.
